Emergency Medicine: Academic Appointment - Joel Lockwood

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Joel Lockwood has accepted a full-time appointment as assistant professor, clinician-teacher, in the Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Medicine.

Dr. Lockwood is currently staff in the emergency department at St. Michael’s Hospital. Additionally, he works as a transport medicine physician for ORNGE Air Ambulance in Ontario and as a trauma team leader at SMH. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Toronto. During his PGY-4 year of residency, he completed training in trauma management at St. Michael's and Sunnybrook Hospitals and pre-hospital care at Ornge Air Ambulance and Sydney Helicopter Emergency Medical Service. Subsequently, he completed a pre-hospital trauma fellowship in the United Kingdom at London's Air Ambulance. He will also be finishing the Master Teacher Program (MTP) in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto this spring.

Dr. Lockwood's clinical and scholarly interest has been in the field of early diagnosis, treatment, and the medical logistics for victims of acute traumatic injury. His interests further include curriculum development and delivery for paramedics, medical students, residents, and fellows, and education of pre-hospital staff, including facilitation of transport to major trauma centres and initial medical and surgical management. Dr. Lockwood's current academic projects focus on the development of an airway management curriculum for paramedics in Ontario. Moreover, Dr. Lockwood plans to optimize early trauma management and investigate methods for intervening earlier during the critical golden hour of trauma.
